The melancholy of a lonesome traveler in the rainy Arizona desert.

The desperation of a wannabe vacationist at the baggage belt in an anonymous airport. The havoc wreaked by faceless devils inhabiting the glassy towers in the cities of London or Frankfurt. Swan songs for Europe’s waning civilization threatened by the barbarians' hatred. Bittersweet romance near poppy fields in the Brown River Country of Austria’s north, where the sky hangs low. Duo singing and blue notes give directions. The wind blows through these songs, sometimes hard, often gently.

THE GILLIES
... are an Americana / Alt. Folk acoustic duo based in South East London.

SUSAN TURNER (vocals, tenor guitar)
and
MARK (GILLY) EVANS (J45, Dobro,vocals)
have been playing and songwriting together for the last 5 years.

"Music for your graveside" is one way The Gillies describe their songs.

True, there's darkness in there but the graveside is also a place to reflect on life, love, loss and the moments that confirm our existence. The Gillies can convey all that in just one song. Their sound, a weaving together of steel-strung and tenor guitars, flits between the ethereal and gritty down-home reality. Delivered with unaffected clarity, their work combines bittersweet immediacy with an intangible sense of nostalgia.

“Our songs seem to have a lull of sadness attached to them, the darkness of lonely bedsits and street lit nights, these memories haunt our songwriting.”

Recently they have supported Gordon Giltrap, Jill Jackson and Green Diesel, played live on West Norfolk Radio and Radio Medway and been interviewed on London’s Resonance Radio. Their video "Adam and Eve" was chosen ‘video of the month’ by Radio Kent’s Doug Walsh.

Past festivals include:

In 2016 they finished their debut mini-album ‘Worries Fold Up Their Wings’ and released their second album "No Hiding Place" in Dec 2018 and are currently recording a new album ‘Masonry Nails’ due to be released in June 2019.
